UTeach Columbus is an innovative program involving mathematics, science and education faculty at Columbus State University and teaching experts in local schools. Together, these faculty and teaching practitioners will prepare CSU students for an exciting career in mathematics or science. This program allows participating students to acquire a deep understanding of their fields of study; explore mathematics or science teaching as a career; and develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed for teaching. Upon completion of the program, students will earn a CSU degree in biology, chemistry, earth and space science, or mathematics and be qualified to teach in a middle school or high school after passing the appropriate state certification examinations.

Congratulations to Tim Jones (UTeach Graduate 2014) and Carrie Ann Sharitt (CSU graduate 2014 in Secondary Science) who were awarded the Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award for New Teachers. The National Science Teachers Association awards up to 25 (K-12) teachers who are in their first five years of teaching with funds to attend the annual National Conference on Science Education. The $1,000 award helped defray the costs of attending the conference in Chicago, Illinois, March 11 – 15, 2015. The recipients were invited to attend a variety of workshops and presentations of particular interest to new teachers.
To be eligible, a teacher must have taught less than five years full-time, be an NSTA member in good standing, and, if possible, have been a student member of NSTA as a pre-service teacher.
Tim and Carrie were honored at the Teacher Awards Banquet which is held during the NSTA conference.
Tim is a teacher at Harris County High School in Hamilton, Georgia. He teaches biology, physical science, and chemistry in grades 9-12. In January 2015, Tim was recognized as the Pitsco Education Teacher of the Month. His accomplishments were also recognized by the College of Education and Health Professions at Columbus State University with the Science Education Alumni Award in April 2016.
Carrie is a teacher at Duluth High School in Duluth, Georgia. She teaches general biology and honors biology in grades 9-12.
